Dear President Obama,
I am deeply concerned about the very serious risks to our environment posed by
extracting natural gas using hydraulic fracturing. It is an inherently dangerous process,
is poorly understood, is inadequately regulated and has been associated with more than
1,000 instances of water contamination throughout the country.
I urge you to put a moratorium on new drilling permits nationally until the first credible
peer-reviewed study of the effect of hydraulic fracturing, currently underway by
the EPA, is completed, and its results are studied and its recommendations can be
implemented.
Please act aggressively to make sure that all future energy policy decisions are based
on science and put the safety and welfare of the public ahead of corporate and political
interests.
