Subject: Tell the Grand Rapids Press to Improve its Iraq War Coverage
On Wednesday (2/28), you received a copy of a packet from the local antiwar group ACTIVATE analyzing your coverage of the Iraq War and calling for the Grand Rapids Press to make improvements in your coverage of the war. Based on their analysis of the Grand Rapids Press' coverage of the Iraq War over the week of February 19 to February 25, 2007 as well as my own observations as reader of the Grand Rapids Press, I am writing you to ask that you do the following in your Iraq War coverage:
1. Utilize a variety of news sources. Do not rely primarily on "official sources" from the government and the military, but instead look at a variety of voices affected by the war. Specifically, try to emphasize Iraqi voices and consult sources in the international and independent media.
2. Report on the human and economic costs of the war. While I understand the need to cover the deaths of area soldiers in the war, please broaden this coverage by expanding the discussion to look at the suffering of the thousands of murdered and displaced Iraqi civilians. Also, examine the economic costs of the war -- who are the local and national entities that have profited from the war, how has tax money been shifted to pay for the war, and how are the costs of the war related to the current economic situation?
3. There is a double standard present when covering antiwar events. If a representative of the United States' government, the military, or military family member is cited, it is rare that a counter-argument is presented. However, it is frequently the case that when an antiwar voice is presented a pro-war position is included. Please provide more balance and utilize local antiwar groups as a resource in reporting.
I look forward to hearing the steps that you will take to improve your coverage of the Iraq War. Additionally, if you have not seen the packet, it is available online at http://www.activategr.org/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/grand_rapids_press_packet-web.pdf
