Subject: Express Disapproval of WXMI 17's Coverage of Antiwar March

As a viewer of WXMI 17, I am writing to express my disappointment in the two stories that you ran on Saturday, March 17 and Sunday, March 18, covering an antiwar march that was held in Grand Rapids on March 17.

Despite the fact that your channel had a reporter present at the march to Ehlers' home on Saturday, your story on the 10:00pm newscast did not interview any protestors. Instead, your story featured five sentences read over b-roll from the protest. These sentences emphasized the arrests that were made rather than the reasons for the protest. While your newscast was correct to assert that the group marched to Ehlers' home because "he's been a long [sic] supporter of the war," your station failed to report what the group wanted from Ehlers. The protestors attempted to get Representative Ehlers to sign a pledge to support an immediate end to the occupation of Iraq and to stop voting to fund the war.

In a follow-up story the next day, your channel interviewed Congressman Ehlers and a member of ACTIVATE about the protest. While this story was an improvement, these perspectives should have been included in the initial story. The second story shows that your channel did do an interview with one of the protest organizers, as it features a clip of an organizer stating on Saturday that ACTIVATE is calling for an immediate end to the occupation of Iraq. Nevertheless, the story interviewed an additional member of ACTIVATE and Representative Ehlers on Sunday about the protest. Despite this, the story is unclear as to why protestors were actually at Ehlers' house. While the demonstrators were calling for Ehlers to support an immediate end to the occupation of Iraq and to stop voting to fund the war, this is not mentioned in the story. Similarly, comments from Representative Ehlers go unexamined and there is no exploration of his voting record and his past support from the war.

In the future, I urge your station to improve its reporting and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on these two stories.
