Subject: Please Support SB 1044 - An Act Concerning Discrimination
Your Personal Statement
As a constituent who lives in Connecticut, I ask you to support SB 1044: An Act Concerning Discrimination without any amendment.
I respectfully encourage you follow the lead of the Judiciary Committee who recently passed this bill overwhelmingly out of the Judiciary Committee!
It is well known that transgender and gender non-conforming people experience widespread discrimination in Connecticut. Your support of this bill is needed to protect these individuals from being fired, denied basic housing, denied credit and most basic services. The testimony provided to the Judiciary Committee was 100% in favor of this legislation and presented a wide diversity of communities, organizations and individuals supporting such legislation.
Currently, a number of major Connecticut corporations (e.g. Aetna, IBM, Pfizer, Xerox, Chubb) as well as many small businesses have explicit policies prohibiting discrimination based on one's gender identity and expression.
I urge you to seriously consider all the stories presented as part of the public hearing in support of this legislation and to support the Transgender Community in being productive, useful and contributory citizens of this state.
This legislation is not about "special" rights; it is about "basic human and equal rights"! Please vote in favor of SAB 1044.
