I support the "Stop Tobacco Sales to Youth Campaign!" effort of YLI's Youth Organizing San Mateo County (YO! Mateo) and partner youth advocates, Stay Safe Youth Coalition (SSYC) and Tobacco Use Prevention Educators (TUPE).
This is a statement of endorsement for adopting a strengthened tobacco retail license ordinance in the Cities and County of San Mateo. Tobacco retail licenses have been shown to be an effective way to reduce rates of youth access to tobacco. For the last 100 years, it has been unlawful to sell tobacco products to youth 18 and under. Currently, approximately one out of four youth are able to buy cigarettes from stores in San Mateo, Daly City and Pacifica! I support a tobacco free environment for youth in San Mateo County.
I am supporting the Campaign by endorsing the following:
1) strengthening the existing licenses in the County and cities;
2) adopting a strong license in cities without any licenses; and
3) ensuring annual license fees are sufficient to provide enforcement of the ordinance.
I support this youth-led action in San Mateo!
