Subject: Don't demolish affordable housing
Hundreds of families (including 170 children) are being forced from their homes in the Lora Lake Apartments in Burien. The Port of Seattle has the option of saving 162 units of affordable housing. Elected officials need to take a strong, public stand on this issue and call for the Port to preserve affordable housing.
The Lora Lake apartments were purchased by the Port of Seattle in 1998 because the easterly one-third of the property falls within the Runway Protection Zone for the Third Runway effecting 72 of the 234 units. In 2000 the King County Housing Authority arranged to use the property for affordable housing until the Third Runway became operational. The Port is currently considering demolishing the entire complex to make way for big-box commercial space.
Lora Lake has been offering affordable housing to families for seven years. Those families have connections to the community and the children attend the local schools. Please do not allow the Port to dislocate 162 families unnecessarily.
