Honorable Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the City Council of Los Angeles:
As an avid arts-lover and resident of Los Angeles, I am asking for more arts programming and promotion of that programming in our great city beginning this summer. I believe Los Angeles is a great city and with that great city should come art that challenges, excites and entertains its residents.
When integrated, the arts engage citizenry, foster a sense of place, and make the very history a great city is built upon. The arts reduce crime, help keep kids in school or engaged in positive activity after school, celebrate our diverse cultural traditions and serve as common ground for diverse constituencies. The arts create jobs and develop the creative capital upon which our region is so dependent.
Art increases the quality of life for every resident just as parks, safe streets and transportation does.
I understand that elected officials have to make tough choices on the way in which resources are allocated. However, the investment made in arts and cultural activities is a win-win for all.
I appreciate your time and consideration of my request.
