Subject: Outraged Racists are Holding an Event in Kalamazoo
As a resident of Michigan, I am writing to express my outrage that the city is working with the racist Internet radio show host Hal Turner to allow Turner to hold a "rally" against "Black Gang Terrorism" in Kalamazoo on August 4. Far from representing the views and concerns of Kalamazoo residents, the "rally" is designed only to further the goals of the racist far-right movement in the United States and is nothing more than hate speech.
Hal Turner is a prominent White Nationalist who has repeatedly used racial slurs to describe people of color. Turner has also consistently asserted that violence is an important strategy for the racist movement. On Turner's July 11, 2007 radio show, Turner said "I've got to tell you that I believe it is going to take extreme violence to fix the problems in this country... Violence solves everything." This statement is part of a history of statements that have advocated the killing of undocumented immigrants, suggested that government officials be assassinated if they do not pass policies sought by the racist right, and advocated the deportation of African-Americans "in chains" back to Africa. Moreover, Turner has advocated direct violence towards people of color in Kalamazoo. On his website, Turner has suggested that Kalamazoo needs "a couple of lynchings" to address crime in the city.
Aside from Turner, the racists' event will feature the prominent Michigan racist Pastor James Wickstrom. Wickstrom has repeatedly asserted that Jewish people should be rounded up and put through "wood chippers," a statement he most recently made on Turner's July 11, 2007 radio show. Wickstrom has been a leader in the far right Posse Comitatus paramilitary formation and has longstanding ties to the racist Christian Identity movement. Other speakers are part of the Ku Klux Klan, including Midland, Michigan resident Randy and Ohio resident Jeremy Parker. As we all know, the Ku Klux Klan has a long and violent history in the United States and in Michigan. Additionally, Turner has extended invitations to virtually every group in the white supremacist movement, including the National Socialist Movement and the Aryan Nations, as well as far right militia groups.
I strongly urge you to consider canceling the rally permit as these groups pose a direct threat to residents of Kalamazoo and beyond.
