Dear Secretary Kempthorne:
I write to urge you to reject the application for the Empire Resorts-St. Regis Mohawk casino at the Monticello Raceway and any applications for other casinos in the Catskills.
I am especially concerned about the impact these massive off-reservation casinos will have on the quality of life in Sullivan County and throughout the region.
With one or more casinos, traffic congestion on Rte. 17 - the region's major artery - and other roads will increase to intolerable levels. That's the last thing we need in the Catskills.
And there will be negative impacts on police and emergency services, open space and farmland.
Finally, you should know that the assertion that there is widespread support for these casinos ignores many of us who live in or visit the Catskills and think that casinos are a bad bet for the region.
I respectfully ask that you deny the Monticello Raceway application and any other casino applications.
