Subject: Pass a Resolution against the Iraq War

As a resident of Grand Rapids, I was outraged to read in the Grand Rapids Press that the City Commission is no longer considering a resolution against the ongoing war in Iraq.

On March 20th 2003, the United States launched an un-provoked and illegal attack on the country of Iraq. Since then, every reason offered as a justification for the war has been proven false. This war has caused the death of up to 1 million Iraqi civilians and over 3,000 U.S. troops--including 144 from Michigan. The ongoing US occupation continues to motivate sectarian violence within the country which is the main cause of instability within Iraq. A majority of Iraqis recognize that the US occupation is a primary cause of instability within the country, and as a result they support an immediate withdrawal of all US troops.

This war has also cost Michigan taxpayers $11 billion dollars, with $217 million coming directly from Grand Rapids. In a time of massive budget cuts at the local, state and federal level, this money could be better used to serve people in Michigan as opposed to financing the occupation of Iraq.

Despite this, our federal legislators--both Democratic and Republican--continue to support the occupation of Iraq. As a city, we need to send the message that we neither support nor can we afford the ongoing war. This is why I am urging you to pass a resolution against the war immediately.
