Dear Supervisor of Sonoma County,
As a concerned citizen of Sonoma County, we are calling upon you to pass an Ordinance similar to the county of San Francisco, declaring Sonoma a County of Refuge for immigrants.
We have become aware that Immigrations and Customs Enforcement(ICE) has been showing up at the homes of immigrant workers at 5:00 am and taking people away from their children and families and deporting them to Mexico. Many of these mothers and fathers have been working for years in Sonoma County. Children are coming to school in dire fear that their parents will disappear while they are away at school.
Although ICE contends they are only tareting those with criminal records, we are aware of numerous individuals who have been taken away who have no criminal background.
The Ordinance would prohibit our local authorities from cooperating with ICE agents beyond the minimum required by state and federal law. We feel strongly that such a step would send a message to ICE that we oppose the conducting of raids and deportations in our County. Please take immediate action to stop these horrendous acts by federal ICE agents.
