Subject: Move the Slots
Dear Councilman Clarke:
A citywide survey found that 79 percent of Philadelphia voters don't want casinos near homes, schools, and houses of worship. I'm one of those voters, and I want you to represent my views.
The entire Philadelphia state legislative delegation has pledged to move the casinos. City Council passed legislation to create a casino resiting commission. And Mayor Nutter has said, "the present locations may indeed be so problematic as not to be viable ... neither of these sites is the best site for a casino project."
More and more experts and elected officials, not to mention people throughout the 5th District, realize that resiting is the only viable way forward.
So I was dismayed to see your recent letter to Rep. Evans advocating for a pro-Sugar House minority in one part of your district, when the clear majority of your constituents across Fishtown, Center City, Northern Liberties, Logan Square, Fairmount, and elsewhere have said over and over that they want slots casinos moved to more appropriate locations.
Councilman Clarke, never in the four-year history of the casino issue have Philadelphians and their leaders spoken more clearly: we have to move the slots. I urge you to make a strong, prompt public statement supporting the re-siting effort. I await your response.
