Subject: Protect Tallahassee Bicyclists & Pedestrians

Your Personal Statement

Dear Commissioners:

I am deeply concerned about bicycle and pedestrian safety in our community and ask you to take a look at the current conditions in Tallahassee.

As your constituent, I ask you to note the following facts:

1. An increasing number of area residents are turning to bicycling and walking as a means of transportation, motivated by a variety of factors including the high price of gas, concern for personal health and the health of the environment and alleviating traffic. And this trend WILL continue.

2. Currently in Tallahassee, pedestrians and cyclists face real danger when they bike and walk around certain parts of our city that are lacking bicycle/pedestrian friendly facilities. DOT reports that in 2007 alone, there were 216 reported crashes involving bicyclists and pedestrians, including 3 pedestrian fatalities.

3. The City of Tallahassee, Leon County and Florida DOT have already commissioned a Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Master Plan that was adopted in June 2004 at the expense of over $300,000 of taxpayer money. The Master Plan recommends programs, policies and projects that would improve conditions for bicycling and walking in Tallahassee and Leon County, but most of the recommendations have yet to be implemented.

4. Investment in bicycle and pedestrian facilities improve the quality of life for everyone by creating multiple safe options for getting around. Tallahassee can join other progressive cities like Austin, TX, Madison, WI, and Portland, OR that have made this kind of investment IF WE START TO PRIORITIZE THIS ISSUE NOW! The longer we wait, the further behind this curve we get.

Given these facts, we call upon you to consider the following steps in making our community safer:

1. Fund a full time "Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator" whose sole responsibility is to oversee the implementation of the Bicycle-Pedestrian Master Plan.

2. Create a Bicycle and Pedestrian Citizen Advisory Board that will advise all relevant City and County agencies regarding cyclist and pedestrian concerns.

3. Sponsor a public education campaign aimed at educating both law enforcement officials and the motoring and cycling public about the rights and the responsibilities of all roadway users.

4. Ensure that laws which protect all roadway users are enforced.

Thank you for your time in consideration of this important matter.

Sincerely,
