Subject: Say NO to a SUNY Tuition Hike!!
Dear Legislator,
On Wednesday, November 12 Governor Paterson called for a SUNY tuition increase of $300 for the Spring 2009 semester and $600 for the following academic year translating to a nearly 14 percent increase in tuition for SUNY students. This is a terrible, short sighted plan which would have devastating long term effects on the over 400,000 students enrolled in SUNY schools.
The New York State Legislature has chronically under funded the state university system for the last three decades. Because of this, CUNY alone has 5000 fewer faculty members than it did during in 1975, while SUNY has lost nearly 1000 full-time faculty due to attrition in the last decade.
State tax support has stagnated in comparison with other states' public universities: while UC Berkeley and UConn receive $14,841 and $12,671 respectively from the state per student, SUNY Binghamton and Albany receive $7,920 and $7,747. During the Pataki years the governor attempted to cut TAP 9 times, and allowed for state funding to drop to a level such that student tuition is nearly 40% of the operating budget.
This is completely unacceptable. New York State needs to make a commitment to higher education. Higher education should be affordable and accessible for all New Yorkers. Increasing tuition and shifting the burden onto the backs of students and families would price many New Yorkers out of a decent education.
PLEASE VOTE DOWN ANY TUITION HIKES! GIVE SUNY THE FUNDING IT DESERVES!
