Subject: Support the RI Dream Act!
I am writing to urge you to support H-5353 - a bill that will allow RI high school graduates access to college at in-state tuition rates if they are undocumented.
This bill accompanies federal legislation - the DREAM Act - that allows undocumented students a path to legal residency and that has overwhelming SUPPORT from the RI federal delegation: it has been co-sponsored by Congressmen Langevin and Kennedy and, in 2007, Senators Reed and Whitehouse both voted "yes" for its passage.
The benefits are obvious. Students - who through no actions or choice of their own came to the United States and worked hard and graduated from high school in Rhode Island - want to go to college and contribute to our economy. If you do NOT pass this bill, the status quo will continue; a status quo where these students are denied access to college and are continuing to create a permanent underclass of under-educated workers.
Just think about it. Rhode Island has always been uplifted by young, passionate, entrepreneurial immigrants. They built factories. They designed new manufacturing processes. They opened small businesses. Now, more than ever, we should be supporting immigrants who want to uplift themselves and thereby uplift Rhode Island.
In our global economy, Rhode Island should be educating our students - not abandoning them to low-wage, low-opportunity jobs. For this, and many other reasons, the bill has had the support of past URI President Bob Carothers.
Let me also say that there is no cost to the state of Rhode Island for this legislation since these students currently don't attend college because of the outrageous costs. If anything, their attendance and paying tuition will increase revenue to the state of Rhode Island.
Recently, the Connecticut House joined 12 other states in passing this legislation.
Please join them in standing up for the American Dream in Rhode Island.
