Subject: Stop the destruction of Jersey City's No.10/ 99s bus line!!!

Dear Elected Officials and Coach USA/ Red & Tan in Hudson County:

Please take action now to return and, most importantly, improve service along the No. 10/ 99s bus route. This route is a critical component of the Hudson County transit system to the New York City Port Authority Bus Terminal in addition to servicing the intrastate transportation needs of Bayonne and Jersey City. You have the public's vast support to grow and expand this line as an alternative to its souring trend or worst, shut down. The first step is to enforce the law on those jitney bus companies illegally overlapping the No. 10/ 99s bus route.

As of June 1, 2009, the fare on the No. 10/ 99s bus line was increased while service was drastically reduced especially in the Heights section of Jersey City. Rather then every thirty (30) minutes between buses, service has been reduced to one bus per hour with gaps up to two hours during the morning commute. The public believes this is the result of rogue jitney bus companies illegally overlapping the route during peak hours which has had a profound impact on overall ridership. In these tough economic times, a minor fare increase is barely tolerable but to cut service that already is operating at a minimum is just unacceptable to Jersey City residents, seniors, students, commuters, shoppers, visitors, and the Heights business community.

As residents, cutting transit service on this line is destroying the beauty of living in an urban area. Limited parking options have always been an issue thus many people that live and work here use mass transit to get in, out, and around the City. Jersey City Heights' residents especially feel stranded without practical bus service along its main street. Additionally, religious institutions are pillars of the community and there are many in the Heights. Their regularly planned citywide community events suffer with limited mass transit in the area.

As senior citizens, we depend on the No. 10/ 99s bus service for SURVIVAL! Seniors in Jersey City depend on the bus line operating along Central Avenue (No. 10/ 99s) to shop, bank, and get to pharmacies. With limited travel options, seniors and people with disabilities need a sensible way to reach their doctors, hospitals, or fulfill daily needs between Jersey City, Bayonne, and New York City. Unlike jitneys in the area, the No. 10/ 99s buses are wheelchair accessible and kneel down for us seniors.

As students, we rely on the No. 10/ 99s to get to school! Whether we are high school students at Dickinson or college students at St. Peter's, NJCU, or Hudson County Community College who live in the Heights, we rely on this bus route along Central Avenue to get to and from school. Other means of transportation in the area require walking further distances which raises public safety concerns specially if arriving home later in the evening hours.

As commuters, we rely on the No. 10/ 99s to get to work on time! Getting to midtown Manhattan in only 20 minutes for a reasonable fare has drawn hundreds of commuters to the Jersey City Heights particularly in the last two years. Being picked up and dropped off from within the Central Avenue business district adds to Jersey City's quality of life and is the reason for being here. We require dependable transportation during the morning commute so we can be dependable employees. Given a reliable and practical No. 10/ 99s bus schedule we can be faithful customers everyday.

As shoppers, we rely on the No. 10/ 99s to reach the Central Avenue Business District. This shopping corridor has over 240 storefronts and is one of the largest business districts in Hudson County. Filled with a variety of shopping, dining, and services, the Central Avenue main street is a major shopping destination.

As visitors, we need transit service to the heart of the Jersey City Heights. Whether we are dropping in on friends, touring Jersey City's rich history, looking for public art, checking real estate, visiting a community event, or just searching for a new dining experience, we need practical transportation to this part of Jersey City and Hudson County.

As a business community, we need the No. 10/ 99s bus along Central Avenue to continue growing. Many of the 1,600+ people employed on Central Avenue depend on the bus to get to work. Limited transit service greatly affects pedestrian traffic and the vitality of our neighborhood and business community in the Jersey City Heights. A vibrant main street goes hand-in-hand with consistent transit service. Without it, Jersey City and the local economy suffer.

In conclusion, we urge our elected officials to assist Coach USA's No. 10/ 99s bus route by taking action now. We insist our elected leaders guide law enforcement agencies towards those rogue jitney bus companies who continue to illegally overlap and undermine the vitality No. 10/ 99s bus route. Both Jersey City and Bayonne municipal courts have successfully prosecuted and fined such companies in the past several months but much more enforcement is evidently required to reverse the downward trend the route is taking. We strongly advise our elected officials not to wait until the line is gone before taking action. The time is now. We believe their proactive leadership will be the deciding difference.

In return, we ask Coach USA to improve service on the No. 10/ 99s bus route. We faithfully support the line given that buses runs at least every thirty (30) minutes along its route from Bayonne to New York City through Central Avenue all day long (5am to 1am). Additionally, the line must run every fifteen (15) minutes during the morning (7am to 10am) and evening (4pm to 8pm) rush hours to accommodate the true demands of our community.

Thank you for your consideration and prompt response. I look forward to your reply.

Respectfully Submitted,
