Dear Speaker Murphy, Leader Fox, and Chairman Costantino:
As a Rhode Island voter, I urge you to repeal the Flat Tax as part of the FY 2010 budget . This tax was initiated with the hopes of spurring job growth, but unfortunately has not worked. In this time of economic distress, the state can no longer afford this tax cut for the elite few.
Only 838 residents of Rhode Island use the flat tax, but according to a fiscal note prepared by the State Budget Office, the tax will cost the state more than $34 million in lost revenue if left unchanged.
Even worse, a majority of the people taking advantage of the flat tax do not even live or vote in our state.
I know you have a very difficult job in trying to create a balanced budget under the current economic conditions. It is obvious everyone is going to have to do their part to help the state regain its financial footing. This includes the very few at the top of the economic ladder.
Thank you for your attention and please, repeal the flat tax as part of the FY2010 budget.
