Drop Irresponsible Contractor now!

Submitted by seiu32BJ on Wed, 2010-03-10 10:59.
I am outraged to learn that DART First State may be using a tax scofflaw to clean its facilities in New Castle County, and the same company is a janitorial subcontractor at the Public Safety Building in downtown Wilmington. Elite Building Services has a history of unpaid federal taxes. It has more than $240,000 in outstanding federal tax liens. And the company has been accused by current and former employees of turning a deaf ear to workers when they complain about working conditions. A former employee had to rely on charity care from a hospital van while working for Elite. A current worker was transferred to a different worksite after she complained about late paychecks. Elite’s treatment of its workers is not consistent with the conduct of a responsible contractor. As public agencies funded mostly by taxpayer dollars, DART and Wilmington should not use tax delinquents that do not respect its workers. I urge you not to renew contracts with Elite or property managers that employ Elite, and to seek a low bidder that is also responsible.

Help Restore the Clean Water Act

Submitted by Glynnis Collins on Mon, 2010-03-08 16:08.
Dear Senator Burris, I'm writing to ask that you take immediate action to pass legislation that will restore historic Clean Water Act protections to rivers, streams, and wetlands in Illinois and nationwide. Since 1972, America has trusted that the Clean Water Act protects virtually all of America's lakes, streams, and wetlands from pollution and destruction. However, recent Supreme Court decisions have threatened the EPA's ability to protect the public from water pollution. Over half of Illinois' river and streams may have lost protections, along with 12% of our remaining wetlands; at least 700 industrial polluters may be able to claim that the Clean Water Act no longer applies to them. Please act now to pass legislation that will restore Clean Water Act protections to waters that have been left vulnerable since 2001. At risk are clean drinking water reserves for millions of Illinoisans, not to mention life-saving flood storage and irreplaceable wildlife habitat for ducks, other waterfowl and shorebirds, and a myriad of fish species. Scientists estimate that one acre of at-risk wetlands can generate almost $10,000 in ecosystem services, including filtering water, storing water in floodplains, and protecting low-lying areas from hurricane and storm surges. It's in our best interests to act now to restore the Clean Water Act and continue to protect Illinois' and America's waterways and wetlands. Sincerely,

Save the Hock Shop

Submitted by quietriot on Fri, 2010-03-05 23:03.
Sir/Madam, As a member in good standing of the United States Civil Air Patrol, I am writing to express my great disappointment at the legal proceedings initiated by Civil Air Patrol against the Hock Shop. The Hock Shop is a member-owned business that has consistently provided CAP members with high quality, affordable products, customer service and speedy delivery. With the restrictions being placed on the Hock Shop due to this litigation, members will be forced to purchase items from Vanguard Inc., a business that has repeatedly disappointed a great many members. This appears to be a show of favoritism toward Vanguard Inc. on the part of CAP, and we, the dues-paying membership of CAP, will be the ones who suffer the consequences. It is my sincerest hope that the Civil Air Patrol reconsiders its legal action against the Hock Shop and allows said business to resume normal operations. Respectfully,

Sen. Klobuchar: Support progressive health care reform

Submitted by MN Citizens Fed NE on Fri, 2010-03-05 10:14.
Please forward my message to Sen. Klobuchar: I'm very disappointed that you are not willing to back a health care public option. I'm surprised that you don't seem to know that the only way to hold the insurance companies and their abuses in check, apart from getting rid of them altogether, is either to have a strong public option plan to compete with the insurance companies, or else strict regulation that forbids them from making a profit off of health care, and controls what they pay providers and what they cover. I hope you haven't been fooled by the Minnesota HMOs, which get less Medicare money than other states' HMOs but still make a nice profit for themselves. Please act more like a progressive Senator, like Paul Wellstone was, and less like a "blue dog" Democrat. Wellstone would be telling you to stick up more for the little guys, and fight the insurance companies.

Please seek bipartisan solution on health care -- and say "no" to the nuclear option

Submitted by unitedrepublican on Tue, 2010-03-02 23:02.
Senator Durbin: I am writing regarding your recent comments to ABC News that Democrats are going to have "to go it alone" on health care. Is this the kind of hope and change your party spoke about during the last election? What ever happened to bipartisanship? Polls consistently show that Americans don't support the current bill, yet now you are threatening to use the so-called "nuclear option" to abuse the rules of the Senate to force through this health care bill? We deserve better, Senator Durbin. We urge you to go back to the drawing board on health care reform, to work with your Republican colleagues to draft a truly bipartisan bill that brings this country together. Your comments to ABC News harm the faith of Illinoisans in our government. Your threats to use the "nuclear option" do the same. If you and your fellow Democrats use partisan, political trickery to force this bill through to the President's desk, you will have abused your office, and the faith of the Illinois taxpayers. I urge you to reconsider your comments and your tactics on health care reform.

Endorse Admiral Ackbar for Ole Miss Mascot

Submitted by Edmonton Singh on Tue, 2010-03-02 19:38.
Dear Chancellor Daniel W. Jones, I urge you to endorse Admiral Ackbar as the new mascot for Ole Miss, the University of Mississippi. The Ole Miss student body has voted to say goodbye to the controversial "Colonel Reb," a mascot evocative of the Old South. As demonstrated in a critical battle in Return of the Jedi, Admiral Ackbar exemplifies the leadership qualities that so many Ole Miss students, faculty, and alumni share. Please offer your support for this movement.
