Subject: End US drone missile attacks in Pakistan!

Dear President Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and U.S. State Department officials:

I urge you to end the use of unmanned drone attacks in Pakistan. These drone attacks kill innocent Pakistani civilians, undermine U.S. political objectives, and fail to weaken Taliban or Al Qaeda forces.

In May of this year, counterinsurgency adviser David Kilcullen stated that 98% of those killed by U.S. drone missile strikes over the last three years had been civilians. The adviser to U.S. General David Petraeus put it simply in his interview with the Financial Times: "It's not moral."

It is clear that Americans are growing weary of the war in Afghanistan. In this context, it may be tempting to see drone missile attacks in Pakistan as a way to appear vigilant against terrorism with minimal political risk. These attacks, however, undermine U.S. goals by killing Pakistani civilians and focusing Pakistani anger on the U.S.

The Taliban are a product of social forces and the domestic policy priorities of the Pakistani army. Drone attacks do little to dismantle these deeper realities.

This past year, more civilians died from terrorist attacks in Pakistan than in any other country. They should not have to face additional suffering from U.S. drone missile attacks. Our government would not fire missiles into a terrorist hideout in New York, Berlin or Madrid. Let us treat Pakistani civilians with the same respect for life.

Sincerely,
