Save Mission Science Workshop!

Submitted by missionscience on Thu, 2010-04-29 17:20.
We, the community of the Mission District, wish to make clear our strong request to restore funding to Mission Science Workshop (MSW), by the Department of Children, Youth, and their Families. MSW provides 3000 youth from the surrounding public schools with meaningful experimental science learning. Mission Science Workshop is more than a youth service within our community (Mission District). It has also supported science education for teachers from the surrounding 20 public schools for the past 18 years. This is the only place in the Mission District where youth can experience science (ei. use a microscope, examine tadpoles, build electronic circuits) and other activities that are not possible in the classroom. Please restore funding and urge DCYF to support Mission Science Workshop. Please Save Mission Science Workshop!

Illinois Needs a Fair Redistricting Solution

Submitted by unitedrepublican on Thu, 2010-04-29 08:06.
Speaker Madigan: I am writing to urge you to stop the unfair redistricting proposal that is ending in the House. Putting the politicians in charge of drawing legislative districts is certainly not a fair solution. I ask that you consider the proposal that would put a bipartisan commission in charge of drawing the districts. This would ensure accountability and fairness. Illinois citizens have had enough of blatant power grabs by their politicians. Corruption, mismanagement, fraud and high taxes have destroyed the faith of the Illinois voters in government. Abandoning the power grab pending in the House in favor of a truly fair redistricting solution would go a long way toward restoring this faith. It's also the right thing to do. Thank you.

Free Speech for Richmond's May Day!

Submitted by maydayrva on Wed, 2010-04-28 10:29.
Dear Mayor Dwight C. Jones and Police Chief Bryan T. Norwood: I am writing to protest the fact that the Richmond Police Department is attempting to deny a parade permit to organizers of a Richmond May Day Parade planned for this coming Saturday, first by failing to respond to the organizers' permit application within the time limit imposed by city law, and second by demanding that the organizers first agree to hire two off-duty police officers, a requirement not included in the relevant city ordinance. I urge the City of Richmond to do the right thing, respect the First Amendment right to peacefully assemble and immediately grant the parade permit. Sincerely, Cc: The New York Times, Washington Post, Associated Press, Richmond Free Press, Richmond Voice The Virginia Defender, Richmond Times-Dispatch, Style Weekly, WRIR, Richmond-area Clear Channel radio stations, WTVR Channel 6, WRIC Channel 8, NBC Channel 12, May Day 2010 Richmond Organizing Committee

Protect Small Farms from Proposed Safety Rules

Submitted by emilybrooks on Wed, 2010-04-28 06:33.
We do not believe that ONE SIZE FITS ALL. We believe in food safety. We believe that the US Department of Agriculture has the right intent in proposing new rules to ensure that meat lockers are keeping dangerous bacteria out of our food products. We believe that the USDA and the Department of Agriculture should continue in their efforts to protect consumers, BUT . . . We believe that these proposed rules open a wide gap for Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations and other Agribusiness Lobbyists to succeed in crushing small-scale farms, producers, and businesses. We believe in fairness. We believe in supporting local and sustainable food systems. We believe in supporting our local farmers, small businesses, and producers. The Agribusiness Lobbyists who dominate the food industry may have a lot more money – many more strategically elected “friends” – but WE are a tenacious, passionate, and resolute people. We will refuse to let our small farms suffer by EASY, one-size-fits-all regulations without our voices being heard. Protect consumers. Protect our farms, our local processors, and our neighborhood producers. WE BELIEVE that the right legislation can accomplish BOTH. WE WILL Take Action: We know that the USDA is on-track to move forward with these new rules unless they hear from farmers, butchers and the general public. We are going to do THREE things: 1. Sign this petition. 2. Call USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack at 202-720-3631. He needs to know how these proposed rules could negatively impact local and regional food systems and family farmers. These new guidelines run absolutely counter to the "Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food" campaign USDA had been trumpeting. 3. Submit our comments on the draft validation compliance guide. Below are the two ways we'll be sending our comments: E-mail to DraftValidationGuideComments@fsis.usda.gov or mail to Docket Clerk USDA FSIS, Room 2-2127 5601 Sunnyside Avenue Beltsville, MD 20705

Save Jhoops

Submitted by bibekp on Tue, 2010-04-27 06:55.
To, The Director, National Institute of Technology Durgapur, Durgapur 713209, West Bengal, India Jhoops is a collective name for the eating places near the main gates of National Institute of Technology Durgapur (NITD) in West Bengal, India. They serve food to the students, staffs and visitors of the institute. Apart from that, they have been serving as a meeting place where students from all departments and levels gather for conversations, planning and casual hangout. There have always been various complaints about the unsatisfactory quality of food in the dormitory mess and institute canteens. Because of that a lot of people prefer to have food at Jhoops where they can ask for food items of their choice at almost any time of the day. Jhoops has been a legacy for all the students associated with NITD and many of their memories with the institute are associated with it. Generations of students have eaten at Jhoops and alumni yearn to go back to Durgapur to have a good time there, along with the food and conversation. Compared to the eating places in City Center which are both relatively far and expensive, Jhoops has maintained a tradition of economic and quality food at a convenient location. Moreover, a lot of students get the facility of eating-on-credit at Jhoops, due to which they don't have to stay starved just because they don't have enough money at the required time. It has been reported that owing to several reasons, the Jhoops are being demolished. We, the current students, alumni and the well-wishers of NITD are saddened by this news. We would like to request the institute and the municipal authorities to reconsider their decision. Jhoops should not be demolished, but instead be protected and taken care of. Better facilities, quality control, hygiene and infrastructure should be developed so that Jhoops continue being the favorite place for people at NITD. We are submitting this petition to the Director of NIT Durgapur, requesting him to take necessary steps to save Jhoops. Better alternatives to demolishing Jhoops would be shifting them to some convenient location, like inside the institute premises. With sincere thanks,

Release the Vialdores Family: From Imminant Eviction

Submitted by hollylkrig on Mon, 2010-04-26 10:40.
Mr Edward Hinsberger Director, Multifamily Hub U.S. Department of HUD 77 West Jackson Boulevard Chicago, IL 60604-3507 Phone: 312-353-6236 x2132 E-mail: Edward_Hinsberger@hud.gov Dear Mr. Hinsberger, We want to bring to your attention that yet another tenant is being wrongfully evicted from Northpoint/Aimco. Carol Vialadores has lived in Northpoint for 16 years. She is raising four children there, all who attend the community public school, Gale--her daughter graduating this year and planning to attend college in the fall. The allegation against her is that she had a verbal dispute with a property manager, and that this person felt threatened. Not only was there no criminal charge filed, but there is a witness who will testify that there was no such threat. Instead, it seems more likely that this is part of a pattern of evictions (and threats of evictions and rent refusal) based on work orders made by tenants. In fact Carol's conversation with this manager began with a discussion over work orders that Northpoint had ignored. It also seems likely that management’s refusal to negotiate with Carol, (evidently ignoring their own lawyer’s suggestion), is retaliation for Carol helping to organize her fellow tenants into a Northpoint Tenants’ Association. You did the right thing before by intervening when Northpoint attempted to evict Erica Bledsoe and her family. We believe you heard us when we said that HUD does not exist, directly or indirectly, to wrongfully evict low-income families who will then face a housing crisis of foreclosure, (one filed every 20 minutes), and eviction, (3,000 pending in Cook County), with no prospect of future housing subsidy. Please contact Aimco/Northpoint and demand that they stop this eviction. We know that Northpoint has the daily responsibility for this property, but you and HUD are ultimately accountable to these tenants and their right to housing. Carol and her children are going to trial May 6th. There is time for you to make a real difference, and that time is now. We also ask that HUD and IHDA investigate AIMCO, as we know that they our spending the tenant's money and our tax dollars to displace poor families.

Opposition To Authorized Taxicab Supervision LAX Contract

Submitted by latwa_action on Sun, 2010-04-25 11:32.
I am a taxicab passenger at LAX and I OPPOSE extending the taxicab management contract at LAX to Authorized Taxicab Supervision (ATS) with its history of misappropriating passengers' money. To do otherwise would send a message that the City of Los Angeles is rewarding corruption. Give the contract to a good company that is NOT CORRUPT. I am aware that a 2007 City Controller audit found that ATS misappropriated money collected from passengers. For example, ATS paid cab company presidents and managers thousands of dollars in cash without any documentation, all money coming from the surcharge paid by the traveling public such as myself. I urge you to protect the public trust by opposing the extension of the contract for taxi dispatch to ATS. A vote otherwise would send the message that the City of Los Angeles does not take seriously the need for integrity and honesty in its operations at LAX. Thank you,

Send E-mail to Kevin McCarthy

Congressman Kevin McCarthy 4100 Empire Drive, Suite 150 Bakersfield, California 93309 Phone: (661) 327-3611 Fax: (661) 637-0867 I am a concerned resident writing this letter to urge you to allocate funding to the prevention and intervention programs for youth at-risk of delinquency that were slashed by local agencies as a result of the approximately 10% budget cut to the county fund in fiscal year 2009-2010 and the proposed 20% budget cut to the county fund for fiscal year 2010-2011. I recognize that the county has fiscal constraints. However, investing in prevention and intervention programs for juvenile offenders can save the county as much as $30,000 per youth including costs of law enforcement, the court system, and correctional facilities. When allocating funds for the 2010-2011 fiscal year budget, please consider the benefits that youth intervention and prevention programs provide to our community.
