Subject: Acupuncture is Safe and Effective; Let Patients Self-Refer
I am one of many patients and supporters of Community Acupuncture clinics, who believe that Michiganders should have the right to self-refer for acupuncture. Many of us do not have health insurance or a regular doctor and cannot afford to seek referral from an MD or Osteopath. Those of us who do have insurance know that many of our aches, pains and stresses can be effectively relieved with acupuncture, and and that going to an acupuncturist first will open space at doctor's offices for people with more serious health problems.
Most of us do seek the advice of a Medical Doctor when we have health concerns; but we do not think that a proven safe, gentle treatment such as acupuncture should require MD or DO supervision or referral. Such a requirement creates barriers between us and our treatment of choice, and it places an especially unfair burden on the uninsured. Moreover, it places an unnecessary demand on the time of already overworked physicians, and on the overburdened healthcare system.
For some of us, acupuncture has been the only kind of treatment that has helped us, or the one most free from unwanted side effects. For others, it has been the most cost-effective treatment. Please allow Michiganders the right to self-refer for acupuncture--a right which citizens of many other states have safely enjoyed for years.
Sincerely,
