Subject: Stop the Eviction of Lenise Forrest from Cabrini Green and Declare a Moratorium on Evictions
Dear Illinois Congressional Delegation and HUD Officials,
When a hard-working mother and her family are put out in the streets just before the onset of a harsh Chicago winter in the midst of an even harsher economic crisis at the same time as banks and large industries are receiving massive bailouts, it is time to pause and reflect on the direction of our city, our state and our country.
Lenise Forrest, a 19-year resident of the Cabrini Green Rowhouses, mother of two and grandmother of two who is a "model citizen" according to Alderman Burnett. She has worked most of the time she has lived at Cabrini Green but given the state of the economy has had a hard time of recent finding a job that will allow her to keep up with her back rent.
She had a payment plan set up under the previous management company which H.J. Russell has claimed to have no record of. She has attempted to bring in payments towards her back rent but they have been refused and eviction is moving forward.
You will be hearing from many people regarding this matter. Housing is a human right and nobody should be put out onto the streets, especially not in the midst of this economic crisis. I urge you to call CHA President Lewis Jordan to insist he stop the eviction of Ms. Forrest.
This is not just about Ms. Forrest, but about the human right to housing. It is time for the people at the bottom of society to be bailed out. In addition to calling Mr. Jordan about the case of Ms. Forrest, I urge you to propose and work towards an immediate moratorium on economically-based evictions of all residents of public and subsidized housing.
Sincerely,
