Subject: Anti-Reitz Union fee campaign

Dear University of Florida Board of Trustees,
I am writing today to voice my opposition to the creation of any fee for the restoration or expansion of the J. Wayne Reitz Union. In a tough economy it is a burden to add an additional hundred dollars to student fees. Fees already increased $100 a semester this year and will rise next year without the Reitz Union fee. Fees already top a thousand dollars per year, which can be over twenty percent of the salary of teaching and research assistants - the dedicated employees who do the majority of teaching and research at the University of Florida. Undergraduates will also be hurt by this fee. All undergraduates, even those on Bright Futures, will be paying an increase in tuition next year. A fee will only be more burdensome. The Reitz Union, while not perfect, is not in desperate need of expansion and I would much rather the union stay the way that it is than have to pay this fee
Student government will claim that the student body supports the fee, but they hurriedly passed a resolution - without specifics about the fee - despite near universal opposition voiced by students at the senate meeting. The student senate even rejected the idea of a referendum to see if the student body actually supported paying to expand the Reitz Union. I implore you to vote against creating this fee. We, the students, do not want and quite simply cannot afford a new fee.
