Subject: Vote No to Proposed Parking Changes In Newton Centre
Your Personal Statement
Dear Aldermen,
I am requesting that the Board of Alderman vote NO to the Traffic Council's proposed parking changes on Braeland, Centre, Union, Pelham Street Lot and Pleasant Street Lot (proposals to add long-term parking meters where none exist, or to replace 3 or 4-hour meters with 12-hour meters). Also known as items #32-06, #33-06, and #34-06.
I am distressed that this matter has come before the Aldermen without a public hearing and I believe that if passed these items will result in a REDUCTION in the parking spaces available for shopping, AND for employees.
Furthermore:
1. Very few people know about these proposals
2. The impact of these changes on existing residents and merchants is not known and deserves further consideration and input
3. These changes are non-trivial. From the Minutes we can see that some concerns were raised by Traffic Council members themselves as to the advisability and possible negative impacts of these changes
4. All these "ideas" should be tested first and not made permanent until their effectiveness, and possible unintended impacts, have been gauged
5. 8-10 hour meters would benefit employees of Newton Centre and local commuters
6. Newton Centre patrons and employees stand to lose approximately 100 parking spaces and gain 0
As our elected officials, I ask that this be voted down.
Thank you for your consideration.
