Subject: A Call for Federal Action on 9/11 Healthcare For All: The Affected but Neglected Petition

Dear President Bush and Secretary Leavitt:
When the World Trade Center was destroyed on September 11, 2001, an estimated 1 million tons of pulverized dust containing lead, asbestos and a long list of hazardous substances was released into a densely populated urban area, penetrating area buildings. Fires at Ground Zero burned steadily for over four months, creating a toxic cloud which hung over neighborhoods, close to the site and much farther away.
As a result of exposures indoors and out, five years later, significant numbers of downtown residents, workers and students are sick. Yet not one federal dollar has been spent to help them recover or to provide medical monitoring that would signal the need for early intervention in future illness.
We call on you to create a federally funded program to screen, track and treat 9/11-related illnesses for all those who lived, worked and attended school in Lower Manhattan and other affected neighborhoods.
It is the federal government's responsibility to give New Yorkers the health care they need to recover from 9/11. We ask that you make protecting the health of all those exposed to the toxic substances released on 9/11 a priority.
