First, it seeks to secure proper redress for former Japanese Latin American internees. Second, we want this little known story to be widely known and so we work to educate the public about the wartime and redress experiences of the Japanese Latin Americans. We are a group of people who believe in Justice and righting wrongs. We believe that wrongs need to be acknowledged and compensation offered and most important some impediment put in place to prevent reocurrences. Public acknowledgement of the wrongfulness of actions can act as an impediment to repetition, so getting an apology and redress is important. We believe it was wrong for the U.S., as it would be for any government, to abduct civilians from other countries and use them in hostage exchanges. In this case, this was done with such secrecy, that few people know the history. We believe secrecy was needed because decent people knowing what was happening would object. Most people first learning of these events are appalled and not wanting to believe we (the U.S.) did this, then need to know what they can do to right these wrongs. |
